A Peek Into the Nest

After checking repeatedly on our pregnant doe for several days, we finally saw her in the nestbox Saturday when we headed out to do our evening chores. A quick look confirmed that the babies were on their way! She had eight of them and so far, they are all doing well. We love peeking in the box and checking on them! As soon as the fur is pulled away and they feel our hand, they start their adorable little squeaking and begin squirming all over the place as they think that it is 'mama.' At first the doe was rather attentive/protective when we checked her babies and even growled some as well, but now she has calmed down and doesn't mind us getting in the box at all . . .

Baby rabbits (called kits) are born hairless and with their eyes and ears shut, and while most would not consider them 'cute', I find them so. :) They're starting to get a tinge of red fur on them now, and their eyes and ears will be opening soon!

  19. It is exciting, Nabila! As far as what we are going to do with the babies . . . well . . . they'll be dinner save for a few that we might keep back for breeding. These rabbits are a meat breed and are, for us, one more step closer to becoming more self-sufficient. But at least we can enjoy them up until that point! :)
