"Love can only be known by the action it prompts"

This is a quote from the definition in Vine's Expository Dictionary of 'love' as used in Scripture. And it was the opening phrase used to begin the teaching this morning which was on brotherly love . . . having a godly love for brothers and sisters in the Lord. So many beautiful passages of Scripture were shared, and I thought I would share some of them with you. They are ones that really spoke to my heart . . .

"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;" (Romans 12:10 - this entire chapter was read, and I would share the entire thing here, but it would be kind of long! It is an excellent chapter.)

"Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire. Let love of the brethren continue." (Hebrews 12:28-13:1)

"Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart." (1 Peter 1:22)

"Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:5-8)

"'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.'" (John 13:34-35)

"Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth." (1 John 3:18; we read through all of chapter 3 and then 4 as well which both speak much about love.)

"This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us." (1 John 3:23)

"And He said to him, ' "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, this is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."' " (Matthew 22:37-38)

And there is no commandment greater than these.
