A Sunday Hymn ~ The Love of God

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star.
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from his sin.

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure,
The saints' and angels' song.

When years of time shall pass away
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God's love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam's race -
The saints' and angels' song.

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure,
The saints' and angels' song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;

Were ev'ry stalk on earth a quill,

And ev'ry a man a scribe by trade;

To write the love of God above

Would drain the ocean dry;

Nor could the scroll contain the whole,

Tho' stretched from sky to sky.

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure,
The saints' and angels' song.

Frederick M. Lehman 1868-1953

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindess toward those who fear Him." Psalm 103:11

"By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:9-10

  3. You're welcome, Mikailah! This hymn has been a favorite of mine for many years . . . especially the third verse. As you mentioned, the love of our God is so far above and beyond what we can ever hope to comprehend here on earth!
