Saying Goodbye

Me and my sweet girl

As the past months have slipped by and Lassie began to struggle more and more with her mobility, I knew the day was getting closer when it would be time to say goodbye. Then this past week, she went downhill rapidly . . . she could hardly walk, she would often fall, and several times when she fell, she couldn't get back up on her own - she would just lay there with a patiently sorrowful look on her face. It was a hard decision to make, and one with many tears, too, but I am glad she isn't suffering anymore.

I am going to miss her!

She was 13 and 1/2 years old and had outlived the average Collie life-expectancy by 1 and 1/2 years. I had had her for over 12 1/2 of those years, and she was my first, and only, dog. And oh the memories I have of her! Playing in the yard with her, watching her soak in all of the attention from children (she was always so patient with them!), having her wandering around the yard while I worked in the garden, her expectant face when it was her dinner time, her playful leaps up into the air when she was especially happy, how she used to race around in circles in the yard as fast as she could go. She was a wonderful dog, and I am so thankful I was able to enjoy all of those years with her!

I know exactly how you feel. We had a rough collie who had to be put down at 14.5 years. They really become a member of your family, don't they? We've had other dogs since, but Tiffin was my favourite - a gentle giant of a dog.
Don't be embarrassed about crying for your doggy friend, it's natural.

  2. Oh, Sarah, I'm so sorry about the loss of Lassie. But what a long and happy life she had with you and your family! It's so ironic that you posted this...I was just thinking about the dogs, and was going to ask you how you kept them from chasing after the chickens and rabbits.

I agree that saying goodbye to our beloved pets is very difficult. We've had to put down several of our pets over the years, and it's always such a tearful experience. Makes us so appreciate the time God has given us with them, and the privilege it is to care for and love on this part of His creation!

  3. I'm sorry to hear that Lassie died. But I'm glad to hear that you had great 12.5 years with her. I love the photos of you & Lassie. I have always love dogs but never owned one so I don't know what's it's like to have a dog and then he/she died.

    ((((((((((((((Sarah)))))))))))))))
Its hard losing a beloved pet.
I lost my Jack Russell at 13-1/2 yrs. old too.
That happens to alot of older dogs, their legs, their hips, they struggle to get up and the cold really gets to them alot.
Yes, that is what is so nice, the memories and tons of love you shared with your beloved Lassie.
